Curious about the buzz surrounding the Showco shirt? Let’s explore its rich history!
These iconic shirts were a staple for crew members at live shows during the 1970s, famously worn by rock legends like John Bonham of Led Zeppelin and Phil Collins. In the realm of southern rock, the Showco shirt is synonymous with Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd, amplifying its legendary status. Crafted by “Denton” Tom, who ran a small custom T-shirt shop called Denton Monogram in Denton, Texas, these shirts were produced in limited quantities, as confirmed by an impressive price list from 1975 showcasing the bands for whom he printed shirts.
As Showco organized tours, they also placed specific T-shirt orders for both crew and band members, allowing them to select unique color schemes and designs. For instance, a note from Genesis crew member Geoff “Bison” Banks, discovered in the Showco Archives, offers a glimpse into this creative process. Moreover, these shirts were never sold commercially or at merchandise stands, making them particularly special and highly collectible!
To the crew, these shirts were often just work uniforms, and many have shared stories like, “I gave mine away.” While the total number produced remains a mystery, the shirts are now cherished by fans—offering you the chance to own a piece of this history!
